Set in the late 1970s, AGNES OF GOD is the story of three women who are drawn together by the death of a child. When Dr. Martha Livingston, (Melinda O’Brien) a disillusioned ex-Catholic psychiatrist, is summoned to a convent and meets Sister Agnes (Heather Campbell), a young novitiate accused of murdering her newborn, she is deeply moved by the young nun’s spiritual purity. Determined to circumvent the overprotective Mother Superior (Kate Gleeson), Dr. Livingstone struggles to unearth the truth about the conception, birth and death of Agnes’ child. Both constantly clash over their seemingly steadfast beliefs while desperately trying to save Agnes. All three women are forced to re-examine the meaning of faith, identity and the power of love. This taut psychological drama culminates YCP TheaterWorks 51st season.

A long-time member of YCP TheaterWorks, Maureen Howard undertakes her 27th directorial program with this production. A graduate of NYU and recent retiree from the Lakeland School District, Maureen has produced many plays and performed many roles, including the role of the Mother Superior in an earlier production.

AGNES OF GOD opened on Broadway in 1982 with Elizabeth Ashley, Geraldine Page and Amanda Plummer. The play, nominated for two Tony Awards and a Drama Desk Award, was hugely successful running for a year and a half. Adapted for the screen in 1985, the film, nominated for three Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and a Writers Guild of America Award, stars Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft and Meg Tilly.
